Chilly Willy's best cartoons were perfect examples of how a potentially one-joke character and concept could end up actually being a perfect mix of the cute and the funny with a lot of colour and good comic timing to go with it.'Gooney's Goofy Landings' is a long way from being one of the best Chilly Willy cartoons, 'The Legend of Rockabye Point' is still hard to beat. For a late Chilly Willy cartoon it is not a bad one and is quite a bit better than the mediocre previous cartoon 'Sleepy Time Bear', although not correcting all the faults with that cartoon. The always watchable Chilly and Maxie are better represented here generally, though they are not at their best, and their chemistry towards each other and with Gooney brings a lot of charm to 'Gooney's Goofy Landings'.Although still of the opinion that he is better as a silent character and that the voice is still too much of a mismatch, Chilly is adorable, despite not being silent and having a voice that sounds wrong, and is also a lot of fun, with his actions speaking far louder than words. Maxie has been funnier but is better used and more likable here than in 'Sleepy Time Bear' and Daws Butler doesn't sound asleep this time. Gooney the albatross is a good supporting character, with good comic timing and with the best moments.The gags are mostly fun and wonderfully goofy, some of Gooney's landings both at the start and when he's being helped really do raise chuckles. Walter Greene's music is lively and rousingly, cleverly and beautifully orchestrated and fits very well. Love the opening title credits music.Some of the backgrounds are nice and Chilly is not too badly drawn. There is some lively comic timing, some humorous lines and Daws Butler does a great job with the voices.However, the animation generally isn't great, like a lot of Chilly Willy cartoons and Walter Lantz-studios cartoons from the late-50s onward. The colours have had more vibrancy before and more problematic is how most of the cartoon is drawn, very scrappy and rushed-looking.It was not much of a surprise to not expect much from the story, but not many Chilly Willy cartoons (although still thin on the ground) are this non-existent. The timing sometimes could have been sharper and there could have been much more variety, the cartoon is basically a series of Gooney landing and it gets repetitive quickly.Didn't care for the photographer character, he is not in it long and he is too much of a dull supporting character that added little.Overall, watchable but Chilly has done much better. 6/10 Bethany Cox
