Salt Water Daffy (1941)

There are plenty of gags in this amusing Walter Lantz cartoon about the Navy. The rat-a-tat pacing and plethora of visual puns make it appear that Walter Lantz was just the nominal director of this cartoon. He seems to have given screenwriter Ben Hardaway his way with the script.Although the United States would not enter the Second World War for another six months when this was released, the handwriting was on the wall. Lend-lease and the draft had been ongoing since 1940 and Hollywood had been producing cheer leading military movies with a view towards that war. Thus this cartoon. It's a god effort, with a great opening gag. If the quality of the jokes slacken after that, enough of them work to keep an audience of children and adults and amused throughout.
