Pooch the Pup teaches a baby bird what its avian instructors can't: how to fly, how to sing and how to torment cats in this far-fetched but amusing Walter Lantz cartoon.By now, Lantz' staff had figured out who they expected Pooch to be: a Will Rogers Jubilo, who hoboed his way onto the screen, hands in pockets, whistling "Golden Wedding Day". Gone were the kitchen sink gags at a rat-a-tat pacing. They still pulled the gags from out of nowhere, including mice everywhere, but the pacing of the gag structure was slowed down to permit the absurd situation to penetrate to the audience ahead of the characters. It might have worked, given some patience on the part of Lantz, Universal and the theater owners, but Pooch was pretty near the end of its run. Too bad.
