The Lumber Champ (1933)
13 Mar 1933 • Animation, Short • 0h 10m
A grab-bag assortment of gags and one duet enliven this "Pooch the Pup" cartoon, which is directed by studio head Walter Lantz. For some reason, musical director James Dietrich uses "Nola" for much of the score. The set-up is that Pooch is a lumberjack in the woods and the wolf is the overseer. The gags are all woodsy in theme, but not particularly great, despite the obvious budget and work lavished on them. Still, the sheer number of them kept up my interest throughout, and the final capper, a variation on the girl-tied-to-the-railroad tracks, has a surprising ending.
