Das Schweigen der Männer (1997)
21 Jan 1997 • Adventure, Comedy • 1h 25m
This film is the definition of camp. Just watch the scene in which the completely robotic Swiss guy starts talking with the quite normal Swedish girl about sex at a table in a guesthouse. My first idea was that this was meant as some kind of dream sequence, but no, this was apparently meant to be taken seriously. The film is about two Swiss guys going hiking in the Alps, talking about life and women and stuff. They meet two Swedish girls, ("Swedish women are good-looking, but boring."). One of the guys continues his backpacking tour in Egypt, with one of the Swedish girls joining him.The film is very slow, boring, and the plot is rather pointless. Acting is not very professional, although the performances of the Swedish actresses is quite acceptable taking into account the context in which it takes place. This film won some Swiss film award(s). It is difficult to see why. The film's name in English is "The Silence of the Men", with an intentional (?) reference to the film "The Silence of the Lambs" (Schweigen der Lämmer.) However, there is no other connection between the films whatsoever. Maybe this play with the names is just an acknowledgement that this film is not to be taken very seriously. I do not know.
