Fandango (2000)

The only thing in the world Shirley Maus (Nicolette Krebitz) wants is to be a model. She's very pretty, kind of cool and hip, but she is just plain too short. Lupo (Richy Muller) manages a nightclub and sells dope for a living. He has fallen in love with Shirley and plans to marry her and have a kid. Sunny (Moritz Bleibtreu) pretends to be a blind disc jockey who in reality is a penny ante dealer. He and his friend Akira (Ill-Young Kim) are always hustling to make ends meet, waiting for the "big deal" to happen. In addition, in a strange, roundabout way these two nice guys strike it rich - for a moment anyway. This well crafted, strictly professional production delivers an intriguing view of German nightlife. Director Matthias Glasner successfully presents a talented cast in a totally believable story. Krebitz easily steals the film from every other actor on screen with her over the top performance. Our sympathies lie completely with her character's hopes and dreams, as silly as they may be. However, the excellent Bleibtreu and the genial Muller give her a good run for the money. "Fandango" is not for everybody. However, it's a good date film for the younger crowd who will appreciate the sentiments and angst expressed in this above average, highly enjoyable film. 3 1/2 out of 5
