Pasodoble (1988)

The craftsman José Luis Garcia Sánchez realizes another passable film full of sourness , antics , binge happenings and brief social critical . Bustling comedy with an excellent plethora of Spanish players and an absurd screenplay , being based on a story written the same director , and collaboration of his usual , Rafael Azcona . It concerns a family of gypsies who occupy a historic mansion . The grandmother , Maria (Antoñita Colomé) had an affair with the deceased owner , an aristocrat prince . She bore two natural sons , Acacio (Cassen) and Poli (Antonio Gamero) and reclaims the palace for her family . There then appears Don Nuño (Fernando Rey) in charge of the historical foundation , his son Juan Luis (Juan Diego) as well as the marriage employees Carmen (Mary Carmen Ramírez) and Velázquez (Miguel Rellán) . In addition , it pops up two cops (Antonio Resines and Pedro Reyes) who attempt to evict the squatters and carry out law and order , but things go wrong . Later on , there shows up a nun (Eva León) and a friar (Luis Ciges) who results to be also son of Maria . Spanish coral film dealing with a merciless denounce to hypocrite society located at a luxury mansion , being decently directed by veteran José Luis Garcia Sánchez and full of ingenious but also ridiculous humor , including relentless social critical but in malevolent intention . A light , rip-roaring comedy , easy to watch , and easier to forget . It is shot in real embarrassment , including absurd scenes and being next to caricature more than realism . In the flick there are especially busy comedy , ironical humor , frantic pace , joy , amusing gags , rowdy satire , noisy hustle and social critique , being shot in José Luis Garcia Berlanga wake . Furthermore , it contains certain confusion , bustle and relies heavily in exaggerated mayhem ; being in anyway clearly inferior to Berlanga's masterpieces such as : ¨Escopeta Nacional¨ , ¨Patrimonio Nacional¨ and ¨Nacional III¨ . Shot in long , complex shots : ¨Planos Secuencia¨, with a lot of rare characters talking , shouting and walking . The main and support actors stand out under swift direction of Garcia Sánchez very far from the tenderness that carried out in previous works , including a bitter , pessimistic mirror on the Spanish society by that time . We can find very fun roles , all of them caricatures and mirrors of the Spanish society of the eighties , concerning the national reality in ironical and critical style and with a lot of known interpreters who provided a considerable boost to the result . The movie displays a Spanish main and secondary star-studded , such as : Fernando Rey , Juan Diego , Luis Ciges , María Galiana , Juan Luis Galiardo , Antonio Resines , Cassen , Mary Carmen Ramírez , Kiti Mánver , Eva León , Miguel Rellán , Antonio Gamero , Pedro Reyes and the old diva Antoñita Colomé . The motion picture was well financed by three great producers : Andrés Vicente Gómez , Hervé Hachuel and Tadeo Villalba , being professionally directed by Jose Luis Garcia Sánchez in his usual style , though contains some flaws , gaps , too much mayhem and it is not among their best works . He is a notorious writer and director , being born in Salamanca, Castilla y León , where he usually shoots his films . Being father of the director Víctor García León . Sanchez is a noted writer and director, known for the great hits as ¨Belle Epoque¨ (1992), ¨Las Truchas¨ (1978) and ¨La Corte Del Faraón¨ (1985) . And specially known for writing : ¨Habla Mudita¨ and ¨Camada Negra¨ for Manuel Gutierrez Aragon , ¨and other films as ¨Corazon Solitario¨, ¨Furia Española¨ for filmmaker Francisco Betriu , and , of course , ¨Belle Epoque¨ (1992) for director Jose Luis Garci . His films debuts were a trilogy of comedies in politic trendy : ¨El Love Feroz¨, ¨Colorin Colorado¨ and ¨Las Truchas¨ (1978) , the latter won Golden Bear in Berlin Festival . He also directed a documentary : ¨Dolores¨ that pays tribute to communist Ibarruri . He subsequently collaborates with Rafael Azcona such as ¨Hay Deshacer La Casa¨, ¨Pasodoble¨, ¨El Vuelo De La Paloma¨ and ¨El Seductor¨ . And two rendition upon Ramon Valle Inclan's novels : ¨Divinas Palabras¨ (1985) , and ¨Tirano Banderas¨ , as well as a pair of farceur comedies ¨Suspiros De España¨ (1995) , and ¨Siempre Hay Camino a la Derecha¨ . Furthermore , two historical films ¨La Noche Mas Larga¨ and and Lazaro De Tormes (2001) . ¨Pasodoble¨ rating : 5.5/10 . Average but passable .
