The story takes place in a village in November 1942,when France was entirely occupied by the German army.In a village where the old wives' tongues were going nineteen to the dozen and where black market was running rampant, a young German Jewish singer,Lise, takes refuge.Being in grip of suspicion and hostility,she only has one friend ,Frederic .Roland ,the schoolteacher and the more liberal man in the village ,tries to convince the inhabitants that Lise is not a German spy but a victim.
