Earl Ellinger leads a dissolute life in Munich's high-society, far away from his estates, where he ruinously exploits the forests to finance his expensive way of life. Only when he flees from his aggressive fiancée, baroness Elena, into the lonesome mountains, he learns about the consequences of his doings from the beautiful dairymaid Lore.
