Epistrofi (1965)
01 Sep 1965 • Drama, Romance • 1h 32m
Twenty years have passed since his last visit to his old neighbourhood, and the accomplished shipowner Dimitris Valentis, in a nostalgic mood, takes a stroll down memory lane, right in front of the tavern where he and his sweetheart Anna vowed to never be parted. It was just before the declaration of WWII, on 28 October 1940, when the two young lovers were planning to marry and have a full life together, fragile dreams that were condemned to never come true, as Dimitris' forcible conscription into the Royal Air Force would leave poor Anna standing all alone in front of the church. In the dark years that followed, proud, yet, impoverished Anna would be forced into an unbearable life of extreme hunger and fear, with a child and desperate from the news of her beloved's death, amidst the German occupation in Athens. Eventually, with not much room left for pride, Anna would reluctantly follow her friend's example and become a prostitute just to survive, unbeknownst to her that Dimitris, who was safe in Cairo, was desperately struggling to reunite with her. What would fate hold in store for the young couple that was abruptly separated?
