Fools in the Mountains (1957)
19 Aug 1957 • Comedy • 1h 30m
It's peak season at the Hurumhei Mountain Hotel, a ski resort, in Norway, with no rooms to be had without a reservation. It is one of the smaller properties within Hotellkoncernet Ltd.'s large chain of hotels, owned by Mr. Granberg, who also acts as Hurumhei's remote General Manager, while overly officious Poppe, who Granberg has never met, is the senior on-site staff person in the position of head desk clerk. Already stressed due to it being the busy season and being currently understaffed, Poppe may regret this job with two other misunderstandings soon to come his way. First, Granberg has allowed his daughter, Ruth Granberg, to go to the Hurumhei to check out Poppe's unauthorized purchase of a snowmobile to transport skiers up the hill. Once she arrives, what Ruth does not tell her father is that learning that the hotel is understaffed, she has begun working as a bell"boy" calling herself Rudolph, something that only the hotel matron knows. As Poppe starts to chum around with his new efficient bellboy, things could get complicated as Granberg telephones Poppe asking to speak to his daughter, who Poppe has no idea is at the hotel masquerading as Rudolph, and as Ruth starts to develop feelings for Poppe himself. And second, Poppe is aware that famous actor Teddy Winter will soon be checking in, two women, actress Eva Sommer and model Mona Miller, who also have reservations and will individually expect to spend time with Teddy. However, Teddy's doppelganger arrives at the hotel, a mild mannered ornithologist, with no reservation, Poppe mistaking him for Teddy, thus giving him Teddy's reservation. When Teddy does arrive, no one, not even Eva or Mona, knows that there are two of them and naturally believe anytime they see the ornithologist that he is Teddy. But as Poppe gets conflicting orders from "Teddy" and sees Teddy in two places at one time, not even the presence of Dr. Grey, another hotel guest who happens to be a psychiatrist, may be able to clear things up for Poppe.
