A community center has been built in town for single working women. The massive skyscraper-brick building is called "Women's House". There Isa lives, separated and frozen in his emotional life, and the hostess Ameli, the collective self-proclaimed messenger. The subject of the day is the young theater life Eva Lind, who is in the process of moving in. Most tenants know that she is the cartoonist Tryggve Krook's mistress, one of many over the years.
