Due to one of his many love affairs Franz Freiherr von Trenck is court-martialed and sentenced to death but can escape by the help of his lover princess Natalie Alexandrowna. At the same time he helps princess Deinartstein who had run away from an arranged marriage with Russian prince Solojew whom she does not love. As this could lead to political complications with Russia which was expected to support Austria in the battle against France and von Trenck again prevents the now forced marriage by empress Maria Theresia, he has to declare his behavior to her. As a result he agrees to fight with his private Pandur corps against France. During his stay in Vienna he discovers that countess St. Croix and prince Solojew are spying for France against Austria. Trenck being trapped by countess St. Croix agrees to join the french troops, but his intention his counterespionage. Guess, will he be successful?
