Marcia Prentiss, a New England spinster, is annoyed when reaching her summer home to find that her niece, Betsy Ann, is there after being told to remain in school, but is there because she misses her sweetheart, Tom Squires. Abigail Prentiss, a younger niece, looks up her old friend Asa Plunkett, who left Marcia at the altar many years ago to go fishing. She finds him in jail. The townspeople have long ridiculed Asa's assertion that there is buried pirates treasure nearby, he being known as the biggest liar in the country or, at least, in seven states. Abigail believes him and her faith is confirmed when she finds an old map indicating where the treasure is buried. Asa breaks jail to start an immediate search. But, before he starts, he shows the map to a local shady character, George Chester, who determines to hijack the treasure with the assistance of his girlfriend, Mabel.
