The film is set in a forest near Vienna, Austria. A fawn deer wanders the forest alone, until visiting the ruins of a castle. A life-size statue of a satyr comes alive and starts playing around. The satyr befriends the fawn, but also repeatedly pranks his new friend. The fawn pranks him in return. Their fun is interrupted by the arrival of hunters on horseback, and an entire pack of hunting dogs. The satyr and the fawn use disguises to escape their notice. As the sun is about to fall, the satyr returns to the castle. He is apparently only alive during the day. The fawn wanders alone again, until ambushed by the hunting dogs. It signals its distress, and the satyr rushes to rescue it. Following the rescue, the satyr becomes a statue again. The fawn is left alone as night falls.
