"Gerald Popkiss decided to go on a rest cure for a few days, his wife to join him at a later date. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Twine, the "mothering kind", had decided that he should stay in a lovely little cottage near her-of course, he would need care and attention, although Gerald was ungrateful enough not to appreciate her kindly interest. Gerald's cousin Clive was there to greet him on his arrival, but the trouble commenced soon after he left. A decidedly intriguing surprise awaited him on his return from the garage. Sitting gracefully on the table was a beautiful girl- clad in pyjamas. The sophisticated, though harmless Gerald , was struck literally dumb. Rhoda, that was the damsel's name, explained the reason for her unseemly attire and presence in the house. It was very unnerving. Her cruel stepfather had turned her out into the night and a (sic) she had nowhere to go, the open door of the cottage seemed an invitation to enter. Things went swimmingly until the charming sister-in-law appeared with husband and cousin just to make sure that dear Gerald was comfortable. Rhoda was hidden away in the kitchen, but although Mrs. Twine found nothing amiss, Clive was not deceived. From then on, "Rookery Nook" is one long laugh, and it is only after a series of side-splitting situations that everything is straightened out to everyone's satisfaction." (from original herald)
