Bud Harvey, who owns the property on which the Sycamore Golf and Country Club sits, wants to marry Marge Martin, who declines his proposal for the umpteenth time. He threatens not to renew the lease to the club and subdivide the property if she doesn't accept his proposal, which would affect her father, Ed Martin, one of the club's directors. Upon secret news that American professional golf champion Leo Diegel is coming to Sycamore, Bud hatches a plan to get Marge for good. He will play Mr. Martin in a doubles golf match, with each able to choose their own partner, Bud who will obviously choose Diegel. If Mr. Martin wins, Bud will renew the lease for ten years. If Bud wins, Marge has to marry him. She agrees to the bet. They decide not to divulge the marriage part of the bet. Marge and her father are dejected when they learn about Diegel. By happenstance, Walter Hagen, British Open Golf champion, also comes to Sycamore that day, he who ends up being Mr. Martin's partner. Diegel and Hagen get their partners out of one scrape after another through seventeen holes. But revelations learned on the eighteenth tee and impossible lies on the green may change the nature of the match.
