People think that sound film began in 1926 with he Jazz Singer. In fact, it began in 1895 when Edison's film unit recorded a man playing a violin and recorded the sound on a wax cylinder. Likewise, experiments in color movies began about 1904 and here we have the earliest recorded example of 3-d movies, done in the old-fashioned two-color process. While general commercial release did not begin until the 1950s -- there was one Pete Smith specialty from MGM in the late 1930s and probably others -- here we have the basic images. This is only of technical interest but it is still tremendously interesting from a historical perspective. Give the erratic history of 3-d movies -- some releases in the 1950s, then thirty years of nothing, followed by a revival with the newer polarized lenses in the 1980s, followed, ten or fifteen years later, by IMAX efforts and in the last year, a slew of animated 3D movies, it's fascinating to see the primitive beginnings.
