While on an African safari, a group of American big-game hunters and their wives run into unexpected hardships, and one of the women dies giving birth. The child, a girl named Agnes, is adopted by the haughty Mrs. Harrington and brought back to the US, where she is raised by the excessively strict Harrington. Years later, when Agnes is now a beautiful young woman, Mrs. Harrington tries to marry her off to the wealthy J. Wilson Rockmaine, but at a party attended by all concerned at the home of John Fairfax, burglars slip into the house to retrieve a large sum of money hidden there. Soon two murders are committed, the police are called and everyone, including Agnes, is under suspicion.
