Chimmie Fadden, a poor but amiable Irish lad, lives with his mother and brother Larry in New York's Bowery. When Chimmie is arrested for fighting to defend a newsboy from a bully, Fanny Van Cortlandt, a millionaire's daughter on a charity mission, who witnesses the fight, arranges for his release. After Chimmie rescues Fanny from a masher, he becomes a bumbling servant at the Van Cortlandt Long Island mansion, where he falls in love with Hortense, the French maid. One night Chimmie discovers his brother Larry and the valet Antoine stealing the silver. Chimmie knocks Antoine unconscious and hides Larry in a fireplace when Van Cortlandt enters to investigate. Feigning intoxication, Chimmie takes the blame for the noise, and Larry escapes with the silver. The next day Chimmie, now discharged, finds Larry and takes the satchel of silver to return it, but the police arrest him for the crime. After Larry confesses, at the insistence of Mrs. Fadden, Chimmie, now released, finally steals a kiss from Hortense.
