Down the winding road of the Santa Ynez Canyons, a sorry- looking Nestor's outfit, drawn by two gaunt horses, lurches along. It pulls up at a broadening in the creek bed and a woman lifts from the seat a little girl, Honey. They look into the back of the wagon anxiously at the pale, emaciated face of the husband and father. Carefully they lift him to the ground, where he rapidly sinks, and in a few moments passes quietly out of this life. The mother falls to her knees in prayer, then taking a shovel from the wagon essays to dig a grave. She is unable to make an impression on the hard soil and taking Honey with her, goes to the top of the hill and looks about for assistance. Bad Buck dashes around a turn in the trail and comes upon the widow and her little daughter. They implore his assistance, but he refuses brutally. At length Honey prevails upon him to return with them to the camp where Buck digs the grave for the widow. He then leaves them, as he is in a hurry to get away, having just escaped from the sheriff in the village. Before he leaves, Honey puts up her face to be kissed, and after some hesitation Buck kisses her. Buck reaches the top of the hill and looks down upon the widow and her child. A feeling of pity comes over him and returning to their camp, he mounts the wagon seat hitching his horse on behind, and takes them to his shack in the hills, where he tells them they are welcome to remain as long as they wish, but that he has to get out. Honey takes a water pail and goes to the creek. She is bitten by a rattlesnake. Her mother hears her screams and comes to her and takes her back to the shack. Buck comes down to the stream. He sees the snake and shoots it. He then discovers Honey's sunbonnet on the grass and hurries to the shack where he finds Honey suffering from the bite. He takes the rawhide from his hat and binds it above the wound. He then goes to the village for the doctor, whom he forces to accompany him back to the shack. They are pursued by a posse and Buck is mortally wounded. They reach the shack in time to save Honey, but Buck, his face pressed against that of the little child on the pillow, and with her calling to him and kissing him, passes out.
