Two young men are aspirants for the hand of Mabel, Henry and Ned, Ned, walking through the park, accidentally bumps into a gouty old gentleman who furiously resents the shock, and Ned amuses himself by tapping the gouty foot with his cane and keeping out of reach of the lunges of the old man. When he calls at Mabel's home he finds to his consternation that the old gentleman is Mabel's father, and manages to make his exit about three inches in advance of papa's boot, which is following him. Ned is obliged to meet Mabel clandestinely, and Henry decides to have him kidnapped when he sees him sitting on a bench with Mabel. He engages two tramps to do the work, and tells them which bench their man is on. Unhappily, however, father appears on the scene and Ned does a disappearing act, and Mabel soon leaves her dad in full possession of the bench. The tramps, therefore, make a mistake and roughly handle papa, tying him to a tree and placing a sack over his head. Henry appears, and thinking it is his helpless rival delivers some beautiful uppercuts and swings on the face beneath the sack. Mabel hears the roars of her father, and calls Ned, who runs to the rescue. When the sack is pulled off the head of Mabel's father Henry is horror-stricken, and loses no time in placing considerable distance between himself and the irate man. Father is grateful to Ned, and forgives him, but Mabel has had enough of her troublesome suitors and dismisses them.
