Broncho Billy, baring received a letter from an old friend of his, Steve Brady, requesting him to take care of his child. Brady dies and the child, a young girl of eight, is sent to the far western country where her now departed father knew that she would grow up to be an honorable and true daughter of his native country. Bess, Steve's daughter, is welcomed by Broncho Billy with open arms and is promised the best of everything that he can supply. Art Diamond, a young boy about Bess's age, is her constant companion. Twelve years later, on her twentieth birthday. Diamond buys a beautiful solitaire for Bess. He proposes to her in his rude way and is accepted. Broncho Billy, having loved the girl from the first day he met her, feels an unexplainable desire to make Bess his wife. From the window of his living room he sees Art and Bess seated beneath an old tree. Watching them closely he discovers Art placing the engagement ring on Bess's finger. The couple return to the house where they ask Broncho Billy's consent to their marriage. Broncho Billy's heart sobs out its grief at the loss of his loved one, but realizing that he has grown too old, he is happy that he has made her happy.
